Texas State Championships are Texas-sized fun!

The 2019 Texas State Championships was a 2 day text of patience and overall fun potential. Challenging wind, rain, and fantastic Texas sunshine all made appearances over the weekend.

Saturday was the UFO Major. Pickering Park in Grapevine was full of dogs as the first Major of 2019 kicked off the season. This was fitting, as the UFO Finals will take place in Texas as well, bringing us full circle with our Texas friends.

For 2019, Dallas Dog and Disc teamed up with the Flying Disc Dogs of Austin to put on the Championship. This combination was fantastic, with both clubs providing hospitality, judges, staff and support.

Teams from all over Texas and even up into Oklahoma were on hand to compete. The wind was gusting, but not consistently. One team would have no wind, and the next a hard 15 mph crosswind. Welcome to Texas!

At the end of the day, The Dallas teams apparently read the wind a little better than their Austin and Houston counterparts. Chuck Middleton and The Captain took the Major win by less than a point over Paul West and Radar. Cole Newby and Seymour finished in 3rd, also less than a point off the top spot! A whisker-thin win for The Captain!

The freestyle championship saw Puerto Rico's Dee Collazo and Sky turn a rough first round of 32.6 into a smashing 37.4 in the second round and win the Freestyle title. Chuck and the Captain took second, and Chuck's red merle Aussie Bam Bam finished in 3rd.

The Throw & Catch win went to Austin, as Tammy Montgomery and Skeeter chalked up 25 points in 2 rounds. The Captain was in second with 23, and Colorado transplant Josh Reed and Tron also put up 23 to take 3rd and qualify for the World Cup Finals.

Sunday was a Skyhoundz Classic Qualifier. Chris Padilla and Poison Ivy came alive to win by 1/2 a point over Chuck and The Captain. The 2nd place finish was enough to establish Chuck and The Captain as the 2019 Texas State Champions.

It was a terrific weekend, with amazing dogs and that fantastic Texas hospitality. This is an event not to miss!
